Learn about the core values of the American Tea Party Movement, what its goals are and its philosophy about the proper role of the federal government.

Beginning in the early months of 2009 as small, scattered gatherings of citizens who were concerned about government spending, the American Tea Party Movement sprang into the media spotlight on April 15, 2009, when millions of people gathered in over 800 locations across the country to protest.

Since then the movement has grown into a major political force within the United States of America. Although not officially aligned with any political party, the grassroots movement has been subjected to both praise and scorn depending on the political leaning of those discussing the movement.

What are the core values and objectives of the Tea Party Movement? The Tea Party Patriots web site, which labels itself as the "Official Home of the American Tea Party Movement," provides a Mission Statement page that lists its three core values.

Tea Party Movement Supports Fiscal Responsibility

The first core value listed by Tea Party Patriots is fiscal responsibility by the government. The movement maintains that each individual has the freedom to spend money that they have earned and that the government must both honor and respect that right.

They espouse the idea that a limited government must implement responsible fiscal policies otherwise the government's expenditures will continue to increase. Ultimately, the increasing need for revenue will subject the nation's people to higher taxation to the point that the liberties, which are supposed to be protected under the Constitution, will be restricted.

The Tea Party Patriots web site points to the United States' "runaway deficit spending" as a very real threat not only to the nation's sovereignty but also to the economic and personal liberty and prosperity of future generations of Americans.

Tea Party Movement Supports Limited Government

Citing the United States' founding documents as the movement's inspiration, the Tea Party Patriots web site lists constitutionally limited government as the second of its three core values. Movement members consider the Constitution to be the country's supreme law and believe that federal government should revert back to its original intent as envisioned by the founding fathers.

The movement supports the right of states to govern themselves in all areas that are not explicitly reserved for the federal government by the U.S. Constitution. Since the government serves the people, Tea Party participants also endorse the personal liberty of each individual within the rule of law.

Tea Party Movement Supports Free Markets

A free market is listed as the Tea Party's third core value. The movement asserts that the founding fathers believed that "personal and economic freedom were indivisible" and that a free market is the economic result of personal liberty.

The Tea Party Patriots web site indicates that interference by the government in the affairs of private business distorts the free market which then discourages or impedes the pursuit of both economic and individual liberty. Movement members oppose government manipulation of private business operations or services and endorse a return to the free market principles upon which the United States was founded.

Mission of the Tea Party Movement

According to the Tea Party's mission statement page, the movement's core values are based on the United States' Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights as explained in the Federalist Papers. The observance by the government of those core values of fiscal responsibility, constitutionally limited government and free markets are critical to the security and personal and economic liberties of all U.S. citizens.

What appears to lead and inspire participants involved in the American Tea Party Movement is the concept that "there exists an inherent benefit to our country when private property and prosperity are secured by natural law and the rights of the individual."

I am a Canadian. You forget so soon that it was all of those objectives that lead to a world wide melt down. Without all those guide lines set out by government those greedy Americans that wrapped up those mortgages and sold them all over the world WILL do it again. If you give people free reign they will devise another scheme to make a quick buck. If people were not so dishonest they would not need to be reigned in. I can't believe how soon you guys forget. All of those perpatrators should have been prosecuted and left penniless. They screwed every one on our life savings. You may believe gov't has a long arm, but if those people needed it. You are setting your sights on the population to do the right thing but we all know money talks and some people will do anything to get it.

Thank you for your comments, Guest. However, I have to respectfully disagree with your assessment that it was the core values that the Tea Party espouses that led to the "world wide meltdown."

First of all, the United States was built and became strong as a result of free market enterprise. It was the entrepreneurs who dreamed, explored, invented, and built what America became. However, over the course of U.S. history, the power of the states weakened as the federal government grew larger, stronger and more expensive and eventually started interfering in the free market.

It was interference and manipulation of business practices by the U.S. federal government that is directly responsible for the economic problems the U.S. and the rest of the world faced over the last three years. Government forced financial institutions to make mortgage loans to people they would otherwise not have loaned money to and set up Fanny Mae and Freddie Mac to buy bundles of loans that had good and bad loans in them. Then, when the number of failed loans reached a critical point, the flood gates opened and the global economy suffered.

Certainly, many financial institutions saw a way to profit from this and took advantage of it but they would not have done so if the federal government had not established the framework to allow them to do so.

This is simply one more example of how government makes things worse for the public when they try to solve social or financial problems by manipulating the free market. Apparently, that is one of the things that people involved in the Tea Party movement want to see end. Regulation of unethical conduct, unscrupulous business practices or physical dangers to the general public is an obligation that government must meet but, otherwise, the government should not interfere.

I agree with most of the Tea Party's ideals, but without a clearly defined objective or plan of action, it's just a bunch of people getting together and saying "Something's wrong". It's great to promote awareness of the problem, but we, the citizens and patriots of this country, eventually have to do something about it. The country has more than doubled its national debt in less than half of a decade. We are almost to the point of no return - beyond which nobody really knows what will happen, but everyone can agree it's bad - when it becomes impossible to even pay the interest on our debt. To prevent this, what we need is a task force to solve the problems inherent in our current political system. The only person or group that I have seen to propose a real, achievable, and perfectly reasonable solution is Mr. Tim Cox, former computer systems engineer and founder of Goooh (.com), currently at about 89,000 registered members and 2,000,000 website visitors. I encourage all Tea Party enthusiasts to check out that movement as well. We CAN fire congress, it's not that far fetched. But if the replacement is a politician chosen by the 2 major parties, the result will be the same. Please readers, do your research on this group. I am confident that every single person who takes the time to read not only the mission, but also the method, behind Goooh will join, regardless of your political party or beliefs. This organization, unlike the Tea Party, does not define a platform or set of ideals. It simply provides a process (and the political thrust of a large group of people) for regular Joes like you and me, maybe even you yourself, to become the U.S. representative for your district.

No government has ever stopped oppressing and abusing its people by being asked nicely. Protesting by gathering a million people in the streets of Washington is not an effective strategy - polls already tell them that people are angry, and they don't care. They have the best military in the world and mob control police to protect them from physical threats, so don't even think about violence. The only way to win is to vote them out and replace them with people who actually represent the will of the people - candidates who will pledge and sign a legally binding document stating how they would vote on several key issues before being elected - candidates who work hard like you and me, who are willing to take 2 or 4 years out of their lives to serve you and your neighbors as representative, and return home - candidates who do not hold ambitions of political power, and even if they did, would be legally bound to leave office after 2 terms. Please help Goooh reach its critical mass of 500,000 members. We're already scheduled to go on the ballot in 2012. Today's politicians think that they are safe - that the common people don't know enough about the system to oppose them. The gauntlet has been thrown, so choose your side. On one side, the Republicans and Democrats who want to maintain their positions of power and spend your tax money on their buddies, and on the other, your next door neighbor, the underpaid genius who works 2 cubicles over, the old man who tells your grandchildren stories, or YOU.
